Kidneys are complex organs that perform the most important function of excretion of liquid wastes from the body. The renal arteries (blood vessels of the kidneys) bring blood to the organs to filter and purify them, before they are sent back to the system. There are chances for these renal arteries to thicken and collapse, mainly from fat deposits. Too much cholesterol in the blood can plague along the walls of the blood vessels and obstruct the flow. Known as vascular stenosis, it is one of the major causes of kidney failure in people. The vascular specialist in Delhi, will be able to deal with the renal blood vessel stenosis and save the organ.

Common vascular diseases that affects the kidneys

Vascular disease affects both the arteries and veins of the kidney. There are many different types of vascular disorders such as,

    • Renal artery stenosis – block in the arteries of the kidneys
    • Renal artery thrombosis – formation of a blood clot in the arteries of the kidneys
    • Aneurysm – bulging or weakening in the arteries of the kidney
    • Atheroembolic renal disease – A embolus (piece of blood clot) from elsewhere in the body travels to the kidneys and blocks the renal arteries.
    • Renal vein thrombosis – formation of a clot in the veins of the kidneys

The common causes of all these diseases are high pressure and atherosclerosis (fat deposit on the walls of the blood vessels). These conditions will affect the surrounding tissues of the kidney. This will result in kidney failure as an end result. The incidence of the disease increases with age. Smokers, people with diabetes and high blood cholesterol level are at higher risk of developing renal vascular disease.

Reasons and symptoms of renal vascular disease:

The major cause of stenosis (constriction) of the blood vessels of the kidney is high blood pressure. Not controlling the blood pressure through diet and exercise and maintaining it high for a long time can result in renal artery disease. Long term stenosis of these blood vessels can result in the failure of both the heart and the kidneys. Symptoms of the disease include fatigue and weakness, shortness of breath, reduced urine output etc. Vascular specialist in Delhi suggest prompt control of blood pressure using medicines and lifestyle changes, to avoid such consequences.

    Treating renal vascular diseases:

Stenosis of the blood vessels results in kidney inflammation. Kidney inflammation in Hindi is known as Kidney Me Soojan and it demands prompt treatment at the right time to avoid complications. In people with mild symptoms, doctors will prescribe medication to help lower blood pressure. For those with significant narrowing of the renal blood vessels, vascular specialists will recommend a procedure to open up the arteries. This helps in promoting and restoring circulation in the blood vessels, and control the blood pressure.

In some cases, vascular specialists in Delhi will prescribe surgical treatment to restore the blood flow to the kidneys. This procedure known as renal angioplasty helps in restoring blood flow to the kidney and preserve their function. In rare cases, doctors may perform a bypass procedure. They will remove an artery from the legs and detour it around the blocked area of the renal artery.

    FAQ

Is surgery the only treatment for vascular diseases of the kidneys?

No, initially the doctors will try to manage the condition using anti-hypertensive medicines. If the condition doesn’t improve, they will suggest procedures like angioplasty (procedure to open the artery) or open bypass surgery to bypass the stenosed renal artery.

    Bottom Line:

Kidneys are important organs of the body. A mild disturbance in the functioning of the kidneys, will alter the functioning of  the entire body. Therefore it is important to take help from a vascular specialist in Delhi to treat the condition at the earliest and to avoid big procedures like renal bypass.
