Motorcycle accidents are among the most tragic because motorcycle riders are more vulnerable to injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,172 motorcyclists died on American roads in 2017.
How Can Motorcyclists Reduce the Risks?
- Use your turn signals. According to a recent study by the Society of Automotive Engineers, 50 percent of drivers do not signal when they change lanes. Another 25 percent fail to signal while making a turn. Motorcyclists are especially at risk of causing themselves injury by failing to signal when passing a vehicle. This simple safety device can save your own life.
- Don’t share your lane. Remember that when riding a motorbike, there are many things that you cannot control. The lane that you ride in is not one of them. Avoid splitting lanes and always ride in your lane. Motorcyclists are not expected to share the lane with drivers. They may be missed when making a turn or lane change.
- Wear a helmet. Florida law allows an adult with an insurance policy providing at least $10,000 worth of medical benefits to operate a motorcycle, but that does not make it a good idea. Wear a helmet to reduce the risk of injury while operating or riding a motorcycle.
- Don’t drive impaired. You would also hope that drivers around you are not impaired by alcohol or drugs. This is not a matter of how you feel, but what is in your system. In 2016, alcohol was a factor in 25 percent motorcycle accidents.
